King Mackerel Fishing Trips in Gulf Shores, Alabama

King Mackerel is popular target of recreational anglers.  It's a migratory species of game fish also known as cavalla, kingfish, or king fish.  With a reputation as a impressive and powerful fighter, they offer a top-notch fishing experience for novices and experienced anglers alike!

Known as aggressive feeders, king mackerel are known to go for almost anything on the end of a line, whether you're fishing with bait—live or dead—or plastic lures.  Getting them to bite isn't usually a problem, but once they do, their fiercely sharp teeth can shred your fishing line in no time.  We have ways to manage that problem—and the rest will be up to you!  (We did say they're a spirited fish that can put up a serious fight.)  Our helpful deckhands can help you with any advice you require to catch fish, and we'll provide the correct bait and tackle for the task, so you can simply fish and enjoy the experience!

How Does King Mackerel Taste?

With a relatively high fat content, king mackerel is known as an oily fish.  It doesn't have an unusually fishy flavor, but it's certainly not the mildest-flavored species of fish, either.  Recipes for king mackerel often suggest pre-soaking to improve the flavor.  It lends itself well to zesty marinades, such as Italian salad dressing.  You can find recipes that flavor king mackerel with everything from citrus to spicy Cajun seasoning.  Choose flavorings that suit your palate, then cook it in your favorite way.  With a firm, flaky texture, it's great for all types of preparations, such as frying, baking, grilling, and smoking.

Twofer:  King Mackerel and Cobia!

Experienced anglers on the Alabama Gulf Coast know that when you're out targeting king mackerel, you can often catch cobia, as well.  That's because the same fishing techniques appeal to both species, so if there happen to be cobia in the area, you may well end up reeling in some of those, in addition to your king mackerel.

Cobia is a great table fish—safe and healthy, with a milder flavor than king mackerel—buttery with a slight sweetness.  You can enjoy cobia grilled, fried, or even raw!  You won't see cobia available commercially often, because its solitary habits make it impractical for large-scale harvesting, but it's certainly a fish worth catching!  If you're lucky enough to catch both king mackerel and cobia on your Gulf Shores charter fishing trip, you're in for a taste-testing treat!
